The Healthcare English Test
Clinical Context
Unlike IELTS, OET materials are based on real healthcare scenarios. The Listening section uses patient consultations, and the Reading section uses medical texts. This makes it more relevant and often easier for medical professionals to grasp compared to academic topics.
- Familiar medical terminology
- Real-world case studies
Profession-Specific Writing & Speaking
The Writing and Speaking sub-tests are tailored to your specific profession. A nurse will role-play a nursing scenario, and a doctor will write a referral letter based on case notes. We provide profession-specific practice materials for all 12 healthcare fields.
- Referral/Discharge letters
- Patient role-play scenarios
Registration & Migration
OET Grade B is the gold standard for registration with the GMC (UK), NMC (UK), NMBI (Ireland), and AHPRA (Australia). We ensure your preparation aligns strictly with the marking criteria of these regulatory bodies to avoid re-sits.
- Accepted by GMC & NMC
- Valid for Visa applications

OET FAQs
Is OET easier than IELTS?
Most healthcare professionals find OET easier because the context is familiar (medical) and the vocabulary is what they use daily. IELTS requires broad academic knowledge which can be harder for medical professionals to relate to.
What score do I need for the UK?
For Doctors (GMC) and Nurses (NMC), you generally need a Grade B (minimum score of 350) in all four sub-tests. Note that NMC accepts a C+ in Writing, but GMC requires B in all.
Can I club OET scores?
The UK NMC allows clubbing of scores from two sittings taken within 6 months, provided no score is below C+ (300). However, rules change frequently, so it’s best to aim for B in one sitting.
