Complete Health Protection in the UK
International students in the UK usually access the National Health Service (NHS) by paying a surcharge. However, for faster access, dental care, and private rooms, many opt for supplemental Private Medical Insurance (PMI).

Navigating the NHS & Beyond
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
If your student visa is for more than 6 months, you must pay the IHS as part of your visa application. This grants you access to the National Health Service (NHS) for the duration of your stay, similar to a UK resident.
- Free GP appointments
- Emergency treatment (A&E)
Why Consider Private Insurance?
While the NHS is excellent, it often has long waiting lists for non-emergency treatments. Private Medical Insurance (PMI) allows you to skip queues, get private rooms, and access specialists faster. It also covers things the NHS doesn’t, like dental and optical care.
- Skip NHS waiting lists
- Dental & Optical cover
Short-Term Students
If you are studying in the UK for less than 6 months, you do not pay the IHS fee, which means you do NOT have free access to non-emergency NHS care. You must arrange private health insurance before you travel to cover any medical costs.
- Mandatory for < 6 months
- Covers repatriation

UK Insurance FAQs
Is NHS treatment completely free?
Consultations with a GP and hospital treatment in emergencies are free. However, you generally have to pay for prescriptions (in England), dental care, and eye tests unless you qualify for an exemption.
How much is the Immigration Health Surcharge?
The fee changes periodically. Currently, it is a significant part of your visa application cost (around £776 per year for students). It must be paid upfront for the total duration of your visa.
Can I get a refund on IHS?
Generally, you can get a refund if your visa application is refused. However, if you get a visa but decide not to travel or leave early, you usually cannot claim a refund.
